Thinking clearly and rationally

All those great men with vision contributed to this progressive world.  They could do this because they were great critical thinkers.  Why can’t we strive to make this world a better place?  Why can’t we solve those problems that surround us?  For this all we need is to train our minds on how to think.  The thinking should be reflective and independent.

We are facing a number of problems  like climate change, illiteracy, population explosion, poverty, terrorism, depletion of natural sources, scarcity of food and water etc.,  Critical thinking is the need of the hour to solve these problems.

We collect facts and information to learn. We reproduce the same during examinations.  But by merely knowing things, are we able to face challenges and solve problems amicably? Only when we think clearly and rationally, we can solve problems.   According to the training manual on life skills, Critical thinking has a long definition.  Critical thinking includes conceptualizing, applying, analyzing, synthesizing and evaluating information generated by observation, experience, reflection, reasoning or communication.

We are able to generate a number of ideas.  We should think if these ideas are relevant to solve the problem in hand?  A critical thinker makes connection between the ideas and evaluates information.  A critical thinker knows how to distinguish between truth and false.  He achieves this because of his curiosity and questioning attitude.

In this era, where education is available universally,  teachers should endeavor to teach the students problem solving, creative thinking and critical thinking.  These are essentials to survive in today’s environment.  Students should be taught how to keep the urge for learning alive all through their  lives.  Time does not come back.   Time should be judiciously used to think for solutions to various problems.  Continuous  learning and making logical connections between ideas are all that’s required.

John Baldoni said- “If you want to succeed in 21st century business you need to become a critical thinker”.

“If today’s student want to compete in this global society, they must be proficient communicators, creators, critical thinkers and collaborators”.
