‘God is in the small details’ – would be an apt description for this movie called Padman, Laxmikant Chauhan is obsessed with making the perfect sanitary pad for his wife , sisters , women of his village in fact for the women of his country at a very subsidized price of Rs.2… He feels it is every woman’s right to hygiene for those crucial 5 days of the month as they are susceptible to infection.
Aaj se teri galiyaan meri ho gayi ,
Aaj se mera ghar tera ho gaya ,
Aaj se meri saari khushiyaan teri ho gayi,
Aaj se tera gham mera ho gaya .
These lines of the melodious song sung by  Arijit Singh set picturised on the newly weds Laxmikant and his wife Gayatri set the mood for the entire movie , where Laxmikant pledges to commit his life to take care of all his wife’s problems and share all his happiness with her .
The ‘ dirty rag ‘ of cloth which she uses and reuses for her monthly cycle inspires and instigates him to manufacture a pad at a cheaper rate as his wife refuses to use the expensive ‘pad’, saying that it will eat into their monthly food supplies.
His mission to make the perfect pad becomes an obsession and the mission of his life . The film has its highlights , Laxmi’s  desperation for women to try his homemade pad starts with him giving to his wife , a student of the medical college and finally to his neighbour’s daughter who has just started chumming .
Things go too far and out of control when he uses the blood from his butcher friend and experiments on himself, resulting in him being asked to leave the village, his wife being taken away to her maternal home and his mother and sisters alienating him.
His wife, brilliantly portrayed by Radhika Apte  tells him she would rather die of shame than be a subject of ridicule due to her periods.
The second half sees Laximkant portrayed by Akshay Kumar in a career defining role ,take upon himself the actual manufacturing of the pad indigenously  using the help of ‘Google Baba’ .
In enters ,Pari , who literally turns out to be ‘fairy’ for Laksmhikant helping him , right from using the pads , helping him put up his entry at the innovative machine competition at IIT , giving up her first job  and help him set up women’s co-operatives  to manufacture and market sanitary pads to deliver his speech at the United Nations  .From Padman to Padma Bhushan , Pari does it all for her belief in one man’s dream when his own people deserted him.
Kudos to Sonam Kapoor to bring her own fresh and lively take to a role – mind  me this  is definitely going to fetch her numerous Awards for the Best Actor in a supporting role. A word has to be put in for Sonam Kapoor’s eclectic dressing style. This woman’s sartorial  dressingchoice will definitely India on the world map.
A large round of applause for Twinkle and her Mrs.Funny Bone Productions  for financing a different subject , “a reel story with a real heart” .
Balki’s Padman has nailed it , is proved in his speech in Linglish – Lakshmikant English at the United Nations.
No review for this movie can end without applauding , Akshay Kumar for portraying Arunchalam Murugunthunam , from Coimbatore ,India’s real Padman. Akshay Kumar walks right from the first scene with his goofy smile , his gait and his conviction as Lakshmikant Chauhan aka Padman from a little corner of India out on his mission for female hygiene.
